I eat what I eat

June 18, 2012 § 4 Comments

Next month will be one year since I stopped buying meat (still buy lots of seafood). I am by no means a vegetarian. I enjoy it when eating at others’ houses or if I’m inclined to order it in a restaurant. I don’t believe in rules, but both Andrew and I have consistently “leaned” in the direction of vegetarianism and now, veganism. I love to cook and above all else I want my food to taste good and make me feel good. Often people (especially within the yoga community) ask me, “Oh, are you a vegetarian/vegan?”

The answer is no, I simply eat what I consider  healthful and I have more and more trouble supporting the industrialized meat industry. That’s where it stops. I have a major problem with all the moral judgments we place on diet.

These photos are from an especially yummy meal I made the other night. Salmon rolls from Lotsa Pasta, chilled avocado soup with cucumber, grape tomatoes, and cilantro, spinach salad, and roasted corn.

many thanks to Joy the Baker for the soup recipe!

About six weeks ago I quit buying eggs, milk,  and butter. However, I can’t even think of giving up parmesan and greek yogurt.

No milk is no problem if you have this for your coffee.

In other words,  I see no point in giving yourself strict rules that ultimately end in a feeling of deprivation. Maybe I’m dense and it took too long to reach this conclusion, but once I did, it’s became easier to sift through all the food chatter.

The more I cook, the more I love it. Our trip to Jungle Jim’s this weekend was heaven…and of course we bought tons of wonderful cheese:

Happy eating!

Happy Father’s Day!

June 17, 2012 § 2 Comments

Love this photo of my Dad–not sure exactly when it was taken….I think when I was in my tween years.

Happy Father’s Day! I hope my Dad has a good one–about to walk across the backyard to bring him his presents. HA!

Also, I should totally submit this to one of my favorite tumblrs, Dads are the Original Hipsters.

That’s not me on his shoulders, it’s my brother.  What a magnificent beard!

my five favorites of the week! It was a stellar week for life in general and audio listening….really hard to pick only five.

‘Call Me Maybe’: Behind the Song of the Summer
All Things Considered —  June 9, 2012
Hilarious examination of the “weapons grade earworm” that is “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen.

Also, a short interview where they mention this:

“Joan Rivers hates You, Herself, and Everything Else”
Fresh Air with Terry Gross — June 11, 2012

“Favorite Music of 2012 (So Far)”
All Songs Considered — June 12, 2012
Every year I look forward to both this show and the year end’s discussion. I love the dynamic between the hosts and always discover a bunch of music!

My favorite discovery:

Also…some more heated debate over Carly Rae Jepsen.

“Great Summer Reads”
On Point with Tom Ashbrook — June 13, 2012

“Camp Awkward”
Joy the Baker podcast with Joy the Baker and Tracy Shutterbean — June 14, 2012
OMG — a verbal mention of this blog that you are like totally reading RIGHT NOW on one of my FAVORITE podcasts! hashtag omgdying.

I’ve been listening to lots of new music. At the beginning of every season, I make a new playlist on Spotify and just dump everything I like into it. Here’s what I’m listening to for Summer 2012.

hey hey hey all! Looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day outside.

To be honest, I’ve had a pretty amazing week. Lots of exciting news on the job front, great weather, podcast blog shout outs, and tomorrow? A trip to Ikea and a foodie’s paradise.

I hope everyone has great plans for the weekend! I’ll be back later with some more “Listen to This!”

OH and this week some genius decided to invent a Lisa Frank photo sharing app….bless them

A trip to Yew Dell Gardens

June 12, 2012 § 2 Comments

Mom and I recently took a trip out to Yew Dell Botanical Gardens in Crestwood. The weather was beyond wonderful and we couldn’t resist the urge to drive with the windows down, grab iced caramel macchiatos, and tour a sculpture garden.

Ahhhhh so beautiful!

I want to thank everyone who reads this blog for putting up with my amateur photography. We got our Pentax a couple years ago and basically this blog has been a practice space for me…ha! I’m slowly but surely coming along, but nowhere near where I’d like to be.

Go check out Yew Dell Gardens–it is wonderful! Someone told me they went to a wedding there a few weeks ago–how amazing does that sound!?!?!?!

some summer essentials

June 10, 2012 § 10 Comments

In my opinion, every season requires a few special things in order to fully enjoy it. Such as pumpkin-spiced  flavored candles and coffee drinks in the fall and gløgg in the winter.

Here are a random eight of my summer must-haves:

Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper — discovered this last year. I know it’s sacrilege around these parts to eat off the cob, but I’m sorry, this just makes it too easy.

The true test of a great summer? The intensity of your Chaco tanlines. Needless to say, Andrew and I don’t need more pairs, but how amazing are these?!?!?!

Fruit. The more the better.

Books. But for me, it must be a certain kind of book. Well-written and preferably literary fiction, but still entertaining enough that it works at the pool or while swinging on the porch. These are some good examples…except for the Gilman one…it’s probably just pure entertainment.

Avocado. And I just discovered this, which I need in my house right now.

Color!

Crisp and cold white wine. Thank god I really like the Charles Shaw Sauvignon Blanc so I can have a little bit every night!

A stoop/porch for some quality sittin’ and drinking the above.

Ready for summer! Things I could do without? The dreaded high temps, the possibility of wearing a swimsuit, and mosquito bites.

Where Am I?
