some summer essentials

June 10, 2012 § 10 Comments

In my opinion, every season requires a few special things in order to fully enjoy it. Such as pumpkin-spiced  flavored candles and coffee drinks in the fall and gløgg in the winter.

Here are a random eight of my summer must-haves:

Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper — discovered this last year. I know it’s sacrilege around these parts to eat off the cob, but I’m sorry, this just makes it too easy.

The true test of a great summer? The intensity of your Chaco tanlines. Needless to say, Andrew and I don’t need more pairs, but how amazing are these?!?!?!

Fruit. The more the better.

Books. But for me, it must be a certain kind of book. Well-written and preferably literary fiction, but still entertaining enough that it works at the pool or while swinging on the porch. These are some good examples…except for the Gilman one…it’s probably just pure entertainment.

Avocado. And I just discovered this, which I need in my house right now.

Color!

Crisp and cold white wine. Thank god I really like the Charles Shaw Sauvignon Blanc so I can have a little bit every night!

A stoop/porch for some quality sittin’ and drinking the above.

Ready for summer! Things I could do without? The dreaded high temps, the possibility of wearing a swimsuit, and mosquito bites.

in need of some detox

ok, so I had a great weekend, but there was a little too much eating out, making ridiculous desserts, and drinking.

In need of a little detox. Getting an early yoga practice in this morning before work. I need it!

I think I might have a problem…

I love margaritas, but have a hard time w/ the super duper sweet ones. So, naturally the SkinnyGirl margarita was for me.

However, after buying it a couple times, I quickly realized that it is overpriced, doesn’t have nearly enough tequila in it, and is basically composed of a few simple ingredients I already have around the house.

I know there is a very good chance that I am late to the party on this, but whatevs I’m so excited about it I just felt the need to share. I’ve been indulging in one of these the past few nights — so refreshing!

my perfected skinny girl margarita recipe:

vigorously mix in a tumbler:

ice
a shot of good tequila (I’ve been using Familia Camarena Reposado and El Jimador Reposado)
the juice of 1 lime
some tonic water
healthy squeeze of agave nectar
sprinkle of sea salt.

The reason I say that I might have a problem is that there is virtually no guilt involved in this beverage — cost is low, ingredients are natural, calories minimal…In other words, this means I have noticed that the bottle of tequila is getting lighter and lighter…might need to save for weekends…HA!

Whoa, tired…

Falling asleep typing this…long, but such a fun holiday weekend. Tons of food, drink, and laughs with great friends and family, including two Thanksgiving dinners, “light up” festival downtown, and the putting up of two Christmas trees!

Tonight was some much needed relaxation with homemade pizza, tomato soup, and SkinnyGirl margarita. Now getting in bed to start a new book. Looking forward to three days of PTO…no work until Thursday!

best $5.00 I’ve spent in a loooong time:

Goodnight!

Resisting temptation

One of my most favorite blogs, Design Mom, articulated the feeling of November 1st excellently…except for one thing…

I love the holidays, but this being my first Fall  living back home in Kentuckiana, I’m even more excited about them and I now have a slight problem, for which I have developed the following mantra:

I will not listen to my holiday playlist until after Thanksgiving.
I will not listen to my holiday playlist until after Thanksgiving.
I will not listen to my holiday playlist until after Thanksgiving.
I will not listen to my holiday playlist until after Thanksgiving.

I hope I make it the next three weeks, but it’s going to be hard with new Christmas albums from

and

Can’t wait to play these while wrapping  presents and drinking me some glögg.

Where Am I?
